I’ve sold over 1,000 lawn care accounts… Here’s what most buyers get wrong.

I’ve never bought a lawn care business in my life.
But I’ve sold over 1,000 accounts.

And let me tell you, I’ve seen a lot of people walk straight into avoidable mistakes.
This wasn't because they did anything wrong.
Because they didn’t know what to look for.

When you have someone who has never sold lawn accounts before dealing with someone who has never bought them...
How do you think that is going to go?

In the early days, I sold some accounts to people that I shouldn’t have.
They were technically “fine”… but not really a great fit;
I didn’t know better at the time.

That changed pretty quickly.
After dealing with some less than stellar takeovers, a court case (which I won), and a few lessons I’d rather not repeat, I figured out what makes a good lawn care business actually worth buying.

It’s not always what you think.

The biggest mistake I see?
It's people not doing their due diligence on the list.

They look at the numbers, ask a few questions, maybe even drive past a few properties, and think they’ve done their homework.
But paper never tells you how the business feels.

If you’re serious about buying, here’s what I suggest:
Pick a random day and offer to work for free with the seller.
You choose the day, not them.
If you let them pick, they’ll stack it with easy lawns and good clients.

You want the truth.

  • How long do the lawns actually take?
  • How close are they to each other?
  • What’s the gear like?
  • Does it look serviced… or like it’s barely hanging on?

One day in the field will tell you more than 100 hours of research behind a screen.

Watch how the seller interacts with clients.
Listen to what they say between jobs.
Check if the work feels smooth… or stitched together in an ad hoc way.

By the end of the day, you’ll have a gut feel for whether this is a good buy or something to walk away from.

You don’t need to be an expert to spot a badly run business.
You just need to show up and pay attention.

Until next time, get out there, mow lawns and have fun

Profit isn’t just about what you charge. It’s about what you keep. When fuel prices started climbing, I saw how fast it ate into profits, especially if you’re running a lawn care business. I’ve been there. And I didn’t want to raise prices just to stay afloat. So, I made a few smart shifts to protect my bottom line: ✅ Optimized my routes using free tools like RouteXL and Google Maps → Less driving. Less gas wasted. ✅ Maintained my equipment with clean air filters, sharp blades, and proper...

When you're just starting out, it's easy to feel like you're already behind. The big guys have flashy trucks, commercial-grade gear, and full-time admin staff handling their bookings. You? You're loading a mower into your personal car, hoping everything fits. But here's the thing most people miss: You can beat the big guys by being faster, leaner, and hungrier. You don’t need to spend tens of thousands just to get started. Top-end domestic mowers will do 90% of what you need without the...
