We thought we were being smart…

Running a business with your partner can either double your power or double your headaches.
Ask me how I know.

When we first started out in our lawn mowing business, my wife and I thought we’d be smart and “share the load” evenly.

  • Both of us took calls.
  • Both of us handled quotes.
  • Both of us managed the booking calendar.

Sounds fair, right?
It was a complete mess.

  • We kept double-booking jobs.
  • Clients were confused.
  • We were confused.

At one point, we literally showed up at the same property twice in one day.

That was when we knew something had to change.

Turns out, “splitting everything 50/50” doesn’t mean you both do everything.
It means you divide responsibilities and trust each other to own them.

So we made a simple change:

  • I took over all the calls and quoting.
  • My wife handled the finances and bookings.
  • Only one person touches the calendar now.

And just like that, things got:

  • Smoother.
  • Faster.
  • More profitable.
  • And way less stressful.

If you’re thinking about partnering with someone in your business, especially a spouse, partner, or family member, make sure you're not just sharing work.

Share roles.
Define who owns what.

And whatever you do…
Don’t both try to run the diary.

Profit isn’t just about what you charge. It’s about what you keep. When fuel prices started climbing, I saw how fast it ate into profits, especially if you’re running a lawn care business. I’ve been there. And I didn’t want to raise prices just to stay afloat. So, I made a few smart shifts to protect my bottom line: ✅ Optimized my routes using free tools like RouteXL and Google Maps → Less driving. Less gas wasted. ✅ Maintained my equipment with clean air filters, sharp blades, and proper...

When you're just starting out, it's easy to feel like you're already behind. The big guys have flashy trucks, commercial-grade gear, and full-time admin staff handling their bookings. You? You're loading a mower into your personal car, hoping everything fits. But here's the thing most people miss: You can beat the big guys by being faster, leaner, and hungrier. You don’t need to spend tens of thousands just to get started. Top-end domestic mowers will do 90% of what you need without the...
