When I first started poking around the world of lawn care franchises vs. independents, I wasn’t expecting a philosophical debate. Every article I read was either singing the praises of buying into a franchise “structured support, guaranteed income, brand power!” Or preaching the gospel of going in as an independent “ultimate freedom, more profits, be your own boss!” Both were trying to sell me something. Both had a point. Over the years, I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit hanging around the backs of lawnmower shops, chatting with owner-operators from every corner of the industry. And what I’ve found is that the fork in the road, franchise or independent, is less about the business and more about the person walking it. Take this job I quoted a while back. The lady blinked at me and said, “The last guy did it for half that price.” I asked why he wasn’t still her guy. “His mower broke down. Couldn’t afford to fix it,” she said. That, in a nutshell, is what can happen if you start with big ideas and no guidance. Big energy. Low prices. Fast burnout. That’s where franchises shine. Systems. Support. A way to skip the chaos of figuring it all out alone. But... those same systems can also feel like shackles. Rules, fees, and territories. One franchise owner once told me he wasn’t even allowed to put his own phone number on his ads. Everything had to go through the head office. Another was stuck with a terrible-paying lawn because dropping it would cost him part of his guaranteed income. It’s a weird world, lawn care. There’s money in it, freedom in it, and just enough mystery to keep things interesting. So, whether you’re the kind of person who thrives with structure or someone who’d rather build something their own way... this industry has a path for you. I’ve walked mine. You’ll find yours.
