When you're running a lawn mowing business... It's only a matter of time before you ask yourself this question: Should I expand my services? You might wonder if it's worth running out and buying hedge cutters and trestles... So you can pick up the occasional hedge job. This can be a good idea... But at the end of the day, it depends on what you want to get out of your business. One of the reasons you got into lawn mowing in the first place was the regular income. You can get that with trees, hedges, and water blasting... But the gap between callbacks can be a long time. This means you could make a better hourly rate... But the time between paydays on a job takes a lot longer. You'd need a lot more regular clients on your books to achieve the level of income you want. Gardening is another option. This is easier to turn into regular work... But while you're busy doing gardens, your lawn mowing gear is sitting there doing nothing. Although it's possible to charge top dollar for gardening... not a lot of people achieve this. And gardens can also be notoriously hard to price. There's an old saying: The jack-of-all-trades is a master of none. You can't be everything to everybody... So don't try. I know that sometimes a quote hinges on you doing other work... But you really need to ask yourself if it's worth it. New lawn care guys feel pressure to say yes to everything. Scared to turn down work because they need the money.
They get burned out doing work they don't enjoy. The guys making real money usually stick to lawns... And maybe 1-2 add-on services max. Better to be known as the best lawn guy than the mediocre everything guy. So if you're going to deviate from lawn mowing... Just focus on a few things you enjoy and can do well. You'll be a lot happier in the long run. You might be better off just doing lawns. If you want to build a focused, profitable lawn care business without spreading yourself too thin... A long time ago I had a customer. He was an accountant, and he had a nice little office on a nice property. He also had a sports car and a boat. All the trappings of luxury one would assume. I mowed his lawn for a while and we would talk occasionally. One day he came out and told me that he was really happy with my service. He said that he liked the way that I smiled and waved every time I saw him. It always cheered him up. He then went on to tell me about the last guy he had who mowed his...
"I guess this is the last time you will be mowing that lawn." This is what the guy with the orange overalls came over and told me while I was working. I knew it wasn't his lawn, so I was understandably confused. So I asked him to explain. The guy in the orange overalls went on to tell me that he had just bought a lawn mowing franchise... And I was working in his territory. This meant that I would no longer be able to mow the lawn I was working on. I was dumbfounded. Seriously?? I couldn't...
a hiss and a roar That's how I went about starting my first lawn mowing business back in 87. Things were easy back then. Drop off a hundred flyers and you would get a few new customers. Then when I wanted more customers, I simply got on the phone and worked my way through the white pages. I built my first full-time business in less than six months. You cannot do things like that anymore. Everything has changed so much. You would need to deliver around 1,000 flyers to bring in a customer......
