When I had five, one person operated vehicles on the road... I took the opportunity to do a bit of research. I timed all the vehicles for around three months and worked out standard times for mowing a lawn...
It wasn't a very scientific study... But at least I knew that all the core information I was pulling in was consistent. We were working in an area of 10 square kilometers... And gaining some efficiencies by splitting the day's workload between the five vans. It turned out that the average travel time between each job was 7.5 minutes. After working this out, I turned my attention to the cut times. Looking at the records for the three months I tracked... It turned out that we were arriving at a new job every forty minutes. After I worked that out, the rest was simple arithmetic. Forty hours divided by forty minutes equals 60 lawns. Now divide that by five days, which equals 12 lawns a day. Although it was accurate then... It's not a true reflection of my business anymore. Nowadays, there's a lot more infilling and smaller lawns in our city... And I now target this kind of work. I average around ten lawns in my five-hour workdays with smaller, more compact lawns. So this works out to one lawn every 30 minutes. Tracking your numbers reveals the truth about your business... And it shows you where to focus to make more money in less time. Most new lawn care guys have no idea how many lawns they can actually do in a day. They quote jobs randomly without knowing their real numbers.
Over the years I've worked on making my business more compact. Targeting smaller lawns closer together. Went from 12 lawns in 8 hours to 10 lawns in 5 hours. That's the power of tracking your numbers and adjusting your strategy. So if you want to learn how to track your numbers and build a more compact, profitable lawn care business... If you love dogs... One way to get more lawn mowing customers is to advertise as "dog friendly." If you're not opposed to the occasional customer forgetting to clean up their dog's little pressies... It can be a great way to stand out in the crowd. Just remember, just because you may love dogs... But that doesn't mean they all love you back. I've got a few scars from dog bites over the years. I remember mowing a lawn once... And a dog bit my leg while mowing out the back. It was a bad bite......
When you're busy with your lawn mowing business, it can seem like it's go-go-go all the time. Lawns to mow... Quotes to do... Days to plan. Who has time for a breakdown? My number one tip here that can save you hours of running around is a simple one. I used to pack up and take my machine straight to the mower shop when it broke down. Then after a few years (yes I'm a...
