let's do the math on customer value


Sometimes when I talk to lawn mowing contractors... They tell me that if it's a low-value lawn... It's hardly worth the advertising it took to bring in the customer. They think spending $25 to bring in a $25 customer doesn't make sense.

But here's the problem: your average lawn mowing customer is worth a lot more than that.

Let's do the math.

Taking into consideration the different seasons... You'd expect to get around 20 mows in a year.

  • If you're looking at a minimum charge of $25...
  • And your average customer lifetime is 3 years...
This makes your lowest customer value $1,500.

Even the goodwill value based on the standard 12-week turnover would be $150. A lot more than you paid to get the customer.

If you were to buy a lawn mowing customer list... You'd be paying somewhere north of $12K for a business of 50 clients turning over $1K a week.

But if you built that yourself... and spent $20 a lead... and only secured one in three quotes... Then it costs you $60 to bring on every new customer.

This means that to build a business of 50 customers turning over $1K a week would cost you $3K instead of $12K.

That sounds like a bargain to me.

Now... Another thing to take into consideration is your time frame. If you want income tomorrow, then buying a business is your only real choice. It would take you six months to build a business this size. But building is your best option if time is on your side.

A good lawn mowing customer is pure gold.

The new lawn care guys are scared to spend money on marketing. They see the upfront cost but not the lifetime value. $199 for a professional website feels expensive when you're just starting.

  • One customer at $25 per mow...
