We’d already talked about setting the van up right. He goes, I asked what the shop guy had recommended. He told me, and it was a top-of-the-line commercial mower. I said, My blood started to boil. This guy was asking for help, ready to stop planning and start working, and the salesman was trying to load him up with a mower that wouldn’t even fit in his van. “This one’s ideal for starting out,” the guy had said. It was shiny. Commercial-grade. Total overkill. Here’s where most people go wrong: They take that kind of advice and walk out with gear they might need in a year or two—but not today. It’s like buying hiking boots just to check the mailbox. After we talked, my client went with a high-end domestic mower for around $1,000. And that’s how he started landing his first clients.
