Why I Don't Buy Cheap Gear

Sometimes when I'm looking around online, I will see a piece of equipment that I want at a great price. I'll look at a mower online and think... I could save $150.

Then... If I really want the mower... I'll head to my local lawn mowing shop and buy it for the full price.

Why would I do that?

It may sound counterproductive, but there's a method behind my madness. You see... The real question here is "What is going to happen if it breaks down?"

Am I going to pack it up and return it for a warranty job? And if I do... How long is this going to take? Meanwhile, what do I do about not having a mower?

This is where buying from your local shop gives you a real advantage.

When I select a local shop to do business, I ask... "What is your turnaround time for contractors?"

A good mower shop will prioritize repairs for their lawn mowing contractors. The usual agreement I make is that I buy from one local shop... And when any piece of equipment breaks, they fix it quickly. (If they have parts on hand, of course.)

This works well for both parties.

If you want an even better service... One way that has worked for me in the past is to pay my account the day it's due. This works wonders, and it doesn't cost you any extra... But it sets you apart from the crowd.

It's a great feeling to call in with a breakdown and be out with the machine running within 15 minutes.

One of the things I struggled with the most when I started mowing lawns was cash flow. A big part of the battle was because I had no real systems in place to make sure I was paid on time. I was so busy running around looking for work... Securing new contracts... and building my business... I didn't have time to go chasing people for payment. I figured that if you do the work, the money will come in automatically. Boy was I wrong. You can work as hard as you like... But unless you have a good...

Sometimes when I talk to lawn mowing contractors... They tell me that if it's a low-value lawn... It's hardly worth the advertising it took to bring in the customer. They think spending $25 to bring in a $25 customer doesn't make sense. But here's the problem: your average lawn mowing customer is worth a lot more than that. Let's do the math. Taking into consideration the different seasons... You'd expect to get around 20 mows in a year. If you're looking at a minimum charge of $25... And...

When you're running a lawn mowing business... It's only a matter of time before you ask yourself this question: Should I expand my services? You might wonder if it's worth running out and buying hedge cutters and trestles... So you can pick up the occasional hedge job. This can be a good idea... But at the end of the day, it depends on what you want to get out of your business. One of the reasons you got into lawn mowing in the first place was the regular income. You can get that with trees,...
